Fake bank statements can look surprisingly convincing. For Coast, a financial platform serving the trades and transportation industries, spotting them matters.

Coast serves thousands of businesses that operate fleets. When a customer requests a higher credit line or something looks unusual in their account activity, Coast may ask for recent bank statements. Those statements help answer two important questions. Can the business afford more credit? And is the financial information authentic?

Coast has used Inscribe for nearly four years to help answer both. Inscribe checks bank statements for signs of tampering and pulls out the information Coast needs to make credit decisions, including cash flow, negative balance days and non-sufficient funds (NSFs).

“Anyone can make fake bank statements that look completely authentic,” said Delia Nuñez, Coast’s Director of Risk. Fraudsters are also using generative AI to prepare for verification calls, making it even more important to look closely at the documents themselves.

The challenge was getting those findings into the decision

Coast already had the tools it needed. Inscribe analyzed the documents, and Oscilar handled credit, fraud and compliance decisions. The problem was that the two systems weren't connected.

Each document request involved a few manual steps:

  • Support sent the fleet a link to upload its statement to Inscribe.
  • Inscribe analyzed the document and surfaced its findings.
  • An analyst reviewed those findings, then went back to Oscilar to update the case.

Across Coast’s revenue verification workflow, that meant hours of manual work each week. It also meant Inscribe’s findings couldn't influence a decision until someone transferred them into the right place.

Bringing Inscribe into Coast’s existing workflow

With Inscribe integrated into Oscilar, the whole process now happens in one place. Coast didn't need to write any code.

An analyst marks the required documents on a case, and Oscilar triggers the request through Inscribe. The fleet receives an upload link, and once Inscribe analyzes the statement, the document and its findings go straight back into the same case.

From there, Coast's rules can use those findings alongside the rest of the information available about the fleet. If a statement looks clean and there are no other issues, the case can close automatically. If Inscribe spots signs of tampering, the case goes to an analyst with the document, findings and case history all together.

Less time reviewing documents, more time on the cases that need it

Since connecting Inscribe and Oscilar, Coast has cut document review time by more than 50%. That improvement is continuing as Inscribe makes more attributes available to Coast's decision rules.

For straightforward cases, the manual review step is no longer needed. Analysts can spend more time on the cases that actually need their attention.

That matters because some types of document manipulation are difficult to spot just by looking at a statement.

As Nuñez pointed out, some of the issues Inscribe catches wouldn't be visible “to the naked eye.” Having a person review every document isn't enough to catch everything.

Better together

The integration works because each platform does what it does best. Inscribe analyzes the document and identifies potential fraud. Oscilar brings those findings into the decision-making process, where Coast can act on them.

“We would never have done the bank tampering or anything like looking at fraud signals on our own,” Nuñez said.

“Roughly 1 in 16 documents reaching financial institutions is fraudulent, and forged and deepfake documents are getting harder to catch by eye,” said Ronan Burke, CEO and Co-founder of Inscribe. “Teams need to move from detection to decision quickly.”

For Coast, that means less manual work, faster decisions and fewer gaps between finding potential fraud and acting on it. Inscribe handles the document analysis, Oscilar handles the decision flow, and the team doesn't have to bridge the gap between them.
