Challenges

BHG Financial’s manual, subjective review process could not keep up with evolving fraud tactics

Document fraud was one of BHG Financial’s most persistent loss vectors. Fraud investigators could sometimes spot patterns in documents, but every investigation depended heavily on individual expertise. Each change in a vendor’s format or software release shifted the visual cues investigators relied on, making it nearly impossible to maintain consistency. “It relied on individual skill sets and experience,” said Michael Coomer, Director, Fraud Management. “That’s not feasible at scale, or with the consistency we needed.”

At the same time, fraud tactics themselves were becoming more complex. Across the industry, AI was accelerating old schemes rather than inventing entirely new ones, making once-subtle manipulations harder to detect. Michael saw this most clearly in non-standardized artifacts, like invoices, where small edits could create convincing but fraudulent documents.

For BHG Financial, this meant the fraud and sales teams needed better support from technology. The sales team was focused on helping good customers move through onboarding smoothly, while the fraud team was focused on ensuring documents were accurate and trustworthy. Without the right tools, striking the right balance between speed and security was challenging. The organization needed a way to scale reviews more effectively and deliver the level of consistency customers expected.

“We were facing an extremely significant level of losses due to manipulated documents. Every investigation depended on individual expertise, and that simply wasn’t sustainable.”

Embedding Inscribe into the workflow gave investigators new visibility and confidence

BHG Financial’s turning point came when the team embedded Inscribe directly into its fraud workflow. Before, investigators often relied on individual memory or personal notes when reviewing documents. Now, Inscribe’s X-ray and overlay capabilities revealed what had previously been invisible: previous versions hidden under new layers, small shifts in text or numbers, and edit histories no human eye could reliably reconstruct.

Just as important, Inscribe didn’t simply return a binary yes-or-no verdict. It offered clear explanations, showing what had changed, how it changed, and why it mattered. That transparency gave investigators the confidence to move faster, without second-guessing their decisions. It also gave BHG a more defensible process, with every decision backed by clear evidence rather than intuition.

The benefits extended beyond the fraud team. The sales team no longer had to worry about spotting document anomalies themselves, which reduced friction for customers and took pressure off staff. “To be asking your non-fraud professionals to call out red flags really is a difficult dynamic,” said Michael. “With Inscribe running in the background, that burden is gone, and cases come to the fraud team with evidence already in place.”

And because Inscribe learns from patterns across a broad network, investigators gained insights that went well beyond what they could see in their own portfolio alone.

“You can’t see previous versions with the human eye. There’s no manual process that compares to what Inscribe uncovers.”

Result

Fraud reviews are faster, more consistent, and more defensible across the organization

The impact has been significant. Fraud investigators now begin each review with clear signals and context rather than relying on hunches. That consistency reduced false positives, since decisions are grounded in concrete edit evidence and patterns drawn from Inscribe’s broader network. At the same time, review speed improved dramatically. What once took 15 minutes per document now takes less than a minute, making reviews over 90% faster without sacrificing diligence.

By catching fraudulent applications before they are funded, BHG Financial has also avoided millions in potential fraud losses. These savings represent not just dollars preserved, but also time and trust gained across the business.

Inscribe has also proven valuable in hindsight. As new detection signals were added, BHG Financial re-evaluated past documents to reassess earlier decisions and refine loss estimates. This retrospective capability helped the fraud team distinguish genuine edge cases from process gaps, while fine-tuning rules and training for the future.

For BHG Financial, the result is a fraud program that’s more consistent, more scalable, and more confident than ever before. Investigators are equipped with the transparency they need to act quickly and decisively, turning what was once a highly manual, subjective process into a reliable system the entire organization can trust.

“With Inscribe, we removed the second-guessing. Decisions are faster, more defensible, and backed by clear evidence.”
